Happy Engineers Day

Why do we celebrate Engineers Day?

Engineer’s Day occurs nationwide in India on September 15th. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the creativity, innovation, and practical skill of engineers, to learn more about engineering, and to get young people interested in becoming engineers.

His deeds became parables. Sir MV (third from left) and Jawaharlal Nehru.

Origin

Engineer’s Day originated as a celebration of the life and work of one of India’s greatest engineers: Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. Some people just refer to this man as ‘Sir MV’, for short. He lived from 1861 to 1962, and his birthday was on 15th September – hence the date of Engineer’s Day in India. Sir MV specialized in dams, for example, he was the Chief Engineer behind the construction of both the system of flood protection designed for the city of Hyderabad and the Krishna Raja Sagara dam which is located in the district of Mandya. He held many high positions in the engineering world, including the Chief Engineer and Secretary to the governor of Mysore. In addition, Sir MV was awarded various titles and accolades, including a CBE (Commander of the British Empire). Sir MV also worked on other projects besides dams, such as working on the Indian railway.

Sir M Visvesvaraya: The Engineer To Remember

He received his training at the University of Madras and then later at Pune’s engineering college. He later moved on to study, and later work, at the University of Bombay, which is where he received his first commission as a professional engineer: this commission involved working with the Indian Irrigation Commission. We might say that this was the first step towards him getting interested in dams and building the majestic dams that are currently so famous not just in India but worldwide. His legacy lives on in many of India’s most celebrated structures and feats of engineering and he reminds an inspirational figure for engineers and aspiring engineers in the present day.

India is not the only country to hold an Engineer’s Day, though the date of this day is (as we shall see below) unique to India for significant reasons. In Brazil, for example, Engineer’s Day is December 11th, reflecting the fact that on this date in 1933 a law was passed to regulate the engineering profession. In Bangladesh, this day is May 7th, and in Spain, it is on March 19th. Plenty of other countries throughout the world celebrate Engineer’s Day, whether annually or at longer intervals.

The significance of Engineer’s Day in India.

Engineer’s Day is significant for two reasons. Firstly, it is significant because it is a celebration of a great engineer and a great Indian historical figure. Secondly, it is more widely significant because it draws attention to, and celebrates, the achievements of the engineering community as a whole. This helps to motivate engineers across the nation, as well as inspiring girls and boys who have an aptitude for engineering to think about becoming engineers themselves. Engineers Day is a very important day because without engineering we wouldn’t have working transport infrastructure, we wouldn’t have dams, and we wouldn’t have buildings and bridges that are safe to travel across and live and work in.

Remembering the titan

Celebrations for Engineer’s Day.

Engineer’s Day celebrations can be a wonderful blend of comradeship, positivity, motivation, and education.

Each year in India, there is usually a set theme for Engineer’s Day. For example, in 2017, the theme for the day was the Role of Engineers in Developing India. This meant that using the theme as a touchstone, those celebrating the day thought about both the role of engineers in developing India in the past and tried to think of ways in which they could continue to develop India in the future as well.

Celebrations may be particularly big in Mysore because this is where much of Sir MV’s work was concentrated. Indeed, he is even known by some people as the Founder of Modern Mysore because he did so much to found new enterprises, and design new structures, for Mysore.

A special thanks to all the engineers present from Ispat Enterprises Private Limited:

Ispat Gold being a construction material producer as well as a supplier wishes all the engineers a very Happy and Safe Engineers Day.

There is no denying the amount of knowledge and technical skill that goes into designing and building a bridge, a building, or a hydraulic pump. We have so much to thank engineers for, from the roads that we drive on in our daily lives to the dams that help to provide us with a stable water supply.

Goddess Durga

People wake up in the morning, spend the day reciting prayers and hymns.

The School colleges and also some workplaces are given holidays or half days because of the starting of the festival.

Food and clothes are offered at the puja mandaps. The food offerings made for the ancestors are usually cooked in silver or copper vessels and typically offered on a banana leaf or cups made of dried leaves. The food generally includes kheer, lassi, rice, dal, spring bean vegetable, and yellow gourd.

MAHALAYA  2020

This time between Mahalaya and Durga puja there is a month’s gap which occurs but this time, “Mahashashthi” marks the beginning of the Durga Puja. Usually, the gap between ‘Mahalaya’ and ‘Mahashashthi’ is six days. But, this year ‘Mahasashthi’ is on October 22 this year. The 35-day gap between ‘Mahalaya’ and ‘Mashashthi’ is regarded as ‘mala mash’ or an ‘unholy month’ which has two new moons or ‘Amavasyas.’ So, ‘mala mash’ is a month when according to scriptures the auspicious rituals are avoided.

The most auspicious duration when Durga Puja is celebrated is the ‘Devi Paksha’ that will begin from October 17 this year. It starts with the first day of the Sharadiya Navratri which is also known as ‘Pratipad.’

Concrete V/s Steel

So, which of these materials is more suitable for your project?

If you are contemplating whether to use concrete or steel as your project’s primary building material, you have several factors to consider. Both are equally worthy of structural materials. Concrete costs more, but arguably offers better overall performance. To understand which material suits your project better, you must know how they compare in strength, durability, fire resistance, sustainability, and, of course, cost.

What is Concrete?

Concrete is a composite material. Concrete is the prime material required for the construction of buildings. Concrete is made by mixing cement aggregates with sand, stone, and water. Concrete can be poured into from works to take any shape or form and takes time to harden it into a stone-like material. Concrete is very versatile and the material for applications that require a combination of strength and durability.

It has the property to resist compressive forces but concrete is weak in resisting tension forces.                                                                        Concrete

The benefits of using concrete

Concrete is so integral to our communities because it is the only building material that cost-effectively delivers:

  • the lowest carbon footprint for a structure or pavement over its lifecycle
  • unparalleled strength, durability, longevity, and resilience
  • maximized energy efficiency via thermal mass
  • durability in any environment
  • a building material that doesn’t burn, rust or rot
  • safety and security
  • versatility – it can be molded into any shape, color, or pattern imaginable
  • no off-gas
  • excellent vibration and sound insulating
  • low maintenance costs
  • 100 % recyclability, plus the materials needed to make concrete are abundant in just about every locale on the planet

What is Steel?

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. It is also common to add other metals to steel to improve its properties. Metals figure quite prominently in prefabricated uses mostly in cities. Steel is the world’s most important engineering and construction material. It is now widely used in every aspect of life. Steel is the world’s most important engineering and construction material. It is used in every aspect of our lives; in cars and construction products, refrigerators and washing machines, cargo ships, and surgical scalpels. It can be recycled over and over again without loss of property.

Steels

Advantages of Steel Structure Construction

  • Steel is a highly durable metal. It can withstand a considerable amount of external pressure. Hence, steel structures are earthquake resistant whereas concrete structures are brittle. Concrete is not as resistant as steel.
  •  Steel structures have a good load carrying capacity unlike concrete structures, which have a low load-carrying capacity.
  •  Steel is a tensile metal. It has a high strength to weight ratio. Steel structures weigh 60% lesser than concrete.
  •  Steel structures can be made without a foundation but this is not applicable to concrete structures as they are heavy.
  • The construction process is faster with steel structures as they are easy to erect. This contributes to faster project completion. On the other hand, concrete construction is time-consuming.
  • Having a good scrap value also makes structural steel a better option than concrete which has practically no scrap value.
  • Steel structures can be easily fabricated and mass-produced. They are so versatile that they can be easily assembled, disassembled, and replaced. Steel structures can be modified even for last-minute changes.
  •  Another advantage of steel structures is that they can be constructed off-site by professional steel fabricators and then assembled on site.
  • Steel structures are an eco-friendly option as they are easily recyclable. This means you get to save money in waste management.
  •  Lastly, steel structures are easy to transport as they are lightweight. Steel structure construction is a safe option, there are no health hazards of using steel structures in construction.

Costs of the products

Concrete: The price of concrete remains largely consistent, which is its greatest benefit. However, the on-going maintenance and repair work, which is a given in concrete construction, calls for additional costs throughout its lifetime.

Steel: Using steel structures or long-lasting TMT bars mostly proves to be economically beneficial. Steel is more durable and does not decay fast with age. Buildings that use steel require less maintenance and other additional costs of repair or redevelopment. Construction steel remains a more cost-effective option compared to reinforced concrete. The strength to weight ratio of steel is higher than concrete.

The decision lies within the customers what product to use. According to their convenience.

Modern Methods of Building Construction

Modern Methods of Building Construction:

Modern Methods of building construction is a wide term and have experienced significant changes. With innovative technologies being improving the qualitative index of buildings.

There are few Modern Methods of Building Construction;

Hybrid Concrete Construction

Hybrid Concrete Construction combines all the benefits of in-situ construction.

Combining the two, as a hybrid frame, results in even greater construction speed, quality, and the overall economy.

Hybrid Concrete Construction can answer client demands for lower costs and higher quality by providing simple building materials. It also offers competitive structures that offer consistent performance and quality.

                                                 Hybrid Concrete Construction

Thin-Joint Masonry Techniques

This technique leads to the reduction of the quantum of mortar. Consequently, mortar can be laid swiftly with enhanced productivity on the longer wall panels.

With large-sized concrete blocks efficiency along with significant cost reduction can be achieved.

                                                Thin-Joint Masonry Techniques

3D Volumetric Construction

3D volumetric Construction involves the production of three- dimensional units in controlled factory conditions prior to transportation to the site.

Modules can be brought to the site in a variety of forms, ranging from a basic structure to one with all internal and external finishes and services installed, all ready for assembly. The casting of modules uses the benefits of factory conditions to create service-intensive units where a high degree of repetition and a need for rapid assembly on-site make its use highly desirable.

This modern method of construction offers the inherent benefits of concrete such as thermal mass, sound, and fire resistance, as well as offering factory quality and accuracy, together with the speed of erection on-site.

                                                    3D Volumetric Construction

FLAT SLABS

Flats Slabs are highly versatile elements widely used in construction, providing minimum depth, fast construction, and allowing flexible column sides. Flat Slabs are particularly accurate and needed to be sealed to the slab soffit for acoustic or fire reasons.

Flat slabs are considered to be more economical and faster than other forms of construction. It is designed with a good surface finish to the soffit, allowing exposed soffits to be used.

                                                                      Flat Slab

Insulating Concrete Formwork

The Insulating Concrete Formwork system consists of twin-walled, expanded polystyrene panels or blocks that are quickly built up to create formwork for the walls of a building.

This formwork is then filled with factory produced, quality-assured, ready-mixed concrete to create a robust structure.

The expanded polystyrene blocks remain to provide high levels of thermal insulation and the concrete core provides robustness and good levels of sound insulation. More information on ICF is included.

                                                Insulating Concrete Formwork

Precast Flat Panel Modules

Precast Flat Panel Modules are wall and floor modules that are manufactured away from the actual site and then transported to the site for erection. The technology has gained momentum due to seamless adherence to specifications of construction.

                                                   Precast Flat Panel Modules

Many of the construction techniques in use today have been around for hundreds of years. Others are a bit more recent—and while we love the time-tested approaches that brought the industry to where it is today, it’s exciting to see how new construction techniques and construction innovations are reshaping our approach.

From modular construction techniques to insulation panels, you can be sure that the innovations impact each aspect of building construction techniques.

New & Innovative Building Construction Techniques

Just to be clear, there are plenty of great new building techniques for construction coming out these days.

THE G IN GDP is GROSS that indicates that products are counted regardless of their subsequent use. A product’s final “sales receipt” will be added to the total GDP figure.

THE D IN GDP is DOMESTIC that indicates that the inclusion criterion is geographical, goods and services counted are those produced within the country’s border.

THE P IN GDP is PRODUCT that indicates for production, or economic output, of final goods and services sold on the market.

How to calculate GDP

There are three ways to calculate GDP

PRODUCTION APPROACH – The sum of the value-added at each stage of production.

EXPENDITURE APPROACH- The sum of purchases made by final users.

INCOME APPROACH- The sum of the incomes generated by production subjects.

EFFECTS ON CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

“ The growth of GDP has declined largely due to the low growth in the manufacturing and construction sector,” Minister of state for statistics and programme implementation said by Rao Inderjit Singh.

The building construction industry in India is expected to record a contract of 7.5% in 2020. Due to the pandemic, the construction industry had been showing signs of weakness. The residential market struggling due to rising unemployment. The quarterly value adds data shows growth in the ‘financial, real estate & professional services’ decelerating to 2.4% in Q1 2020.

Reduced labour at construction sites may lead to the idling of the plant and machinery deployed for construction work. These machines have a fixed hiring cost, which is charged to any project regardless of the machine utilization.

Modular and Prefabricated Construction

The popularity of modular and prefabricated construction projects. Modular construction companies are making there stand because of the significantly expedited rate at which they can build residential and commercial buildings.

Modular construction is a prefabricated approach to building repetitive structures, so office buildings, hotels, apartments, and other commercial buildings are great for modular and prefabricated buildings.

Prefabricated and modular construction are rising trends because of the time, energy, and cost savings it provides. Modular construction saves companies a significant amount of time and money because units are built off-campus, meaning companies do not have to deal with usual barriers to construction such as weather or limited working hours.

This helps cut back on waste and make the building process more sustainable, which is another rising trend in the industry. Modular construction is a huge rising trend because of the time, energy, and cost savings associated with it, and is sure to keep gaining popularity through 2020.

MODULAR CONSTRUCTION

Advantages of this Development:

Virtual Reality

These technologies are already making a huge impact on many industries around the world, and the construction industry is no exception. Buildings are becoming ever more complicated, and these technologies are helping architects and construction teams improve designs and detect design errors. To date, architects and design through interactive design and gesture interfacing. 2020 is set to see this technology’s influence on the industry expand even further.

Increased Safety Equipment

Another construction industry trend that will continue into 2020 is the improving standards and use of better safety equipment products. Safety is a cornerstone for LP, so we are excited to hear of this advancing trend industry-wide.

Revolution in the construction industry:

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly ensuring greater efficiency in construction. The result is a reduction in construction costs and increased safety, both in planning and on the construction site. As soon as a machine imitates human cognitive tasks, i.e. recognizes patterns, is able to solve problems independently, and can learn, it is called artificial intelligence.

Important advantages of AI in the building industry: Artificial neutral networks help predict cost overruns. Furthermore, forecast models calculate realistic time constraints for project control. And with training materials available online, new know-how becomes available to employees in no time at all, and they can be trained quicker and more efficiently. Analysis and prioritization of the numerous risk factors are also supported. AI systems take on the role of intelligent assistance and handle the daily flood information. Solve the unsolved problems and form of information provided with.
